8 easy ways to get an outdoor workout this spring

It’s easy to get a workout at this time of year… just step outside!  Choose one or more of the following activities, start slowly and ramp up gradually, and say hello to a happier, healthier you!
  1. Walking: Walking more is the single best thing most Canadians can do to improve their health. Adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise each week, and walking requires no special equipment, can be done almost anywhere, and it’s free.
  2. Tennis: Head to your community courts a couple of times a week for a rally with friends or family. You’ll enhance your health, enjoy quality time together, and improve your game.
  3. Running: Slap on some sunscreen and lace up your runners. Whether you’re fast or slow, or go around the block or conquer 5 KM or more, you’re a runner. Need a little extra motivation to get started? Sign up for a run in support of a charitable cause with a friend and train together.
  4. Cycling: Ride around the neighbourhood with the kids or pedal your way to work… either way, cycling is the coolest way to get around town.  Use your bike as a practical method of transportation and enhance your health. Win-win!
  5. Play with the kids: Go outside and play! Teach your kids the games you played when you were a child, check out a new local park every week, or assemble the neighbours for a game of road hockey. Healthy fun for all!
  6. Gardening: Cut the grass. Trim the hedge. Weed the lawn. All the lifting, reaching, cutting and bending involved in gardening is good for your functional fitness, strengthens muscles, and can increase your range of motion and flexibility. Your garden will look great and so will you!
  7. Swimming: Swimming improves heart health, strengthens and tone muscles, promotes relaxation, and improves flexibility. It’s also an ideal activity for those with arthritis wishing to maintain strong joints without weight-bearing.
  8. Hiking: Exercise and time in nature are proven stress busters and have proven health benefits. Combine them, enjoy them regularly, and you’ll be well on your way to optimizing your physical and mental health.
