The many benefits of meditation

I practice mindfulness and meditation on a regular basis. Both are often associated with states of deep relaxation, focus, peace and insight. Perhaps it makes sense then that so many athletes practice regularly to help them focus their thoughts and energy.

Though the experience is different for each participant, through regular practice, many will experience some of the following benefits:

  • A reduction in pain
  • Reduced feelings of anger, anxiety and depression
  • A sense of balance, calm, and peace
  • A slower heart rate
  • More controlled thoughts
  • A reduction in stress and a tool to help manage it
  • Increased energy
  • Improved sleep

  • Increased happiness
  • Improved relationships with others
  • An increased sense of clarity and purpose

There is evidence to support the practice for adults and children and as you’d expect, there are many apps available for use with smartphones. I use a couple of these myself!
